State of Decay 2 multiplayer questions answered: matchmaking, playing solo, with friends and does it have local co-op?

State of Decay 2 has a few multiplayer options and can also be played solo for those that prefer to go lone wolf. Let's run through all the options and what they allow you to do and not do.

There are three main options for play in State of Decay 2. You can play solo, with friends or with other Xbox One players via matchmaking. There are also a few things you can't do, which we should also address so it's clear what the limitations are.

When you first begin State of Decay 2 you're given your multiplayer options. You can choose Offline, Invite Only and Friends Only.

The important thing here is this does not lock you into a rigid choice. You can switch between all three of these options at any point by going into the menu, choosing Settings, then Multiplayer, then changing your preference to one of the three choices.

Can I playing State of Decay 2 solo?

Choosing Offline only makes State of Decay 2 a single-player experience. Offline is the only option that will pause the game completely. If you're being attacked in Invite Only or Friends Only and you're playing without co-op buddies, going into the menus will not pause the game. That's a pretty important thing to remember.

Is there local co-op?

Sorry, State of Decay 2 does not support local co-op or couch co-op. There is no splitscreen option. If you want to play co-op, you'll need to be online. The good news is State of Decay 2 supports up to 4 players in any co-op session.

How to play multiplayer co-op

There are three options to play multiplayer in State of Decay 2. In State of Decay 2, the host of the multiplayer co-op session is the one who is rewarded the most, as there are limitations on resources and supplies that are found, who can access them, and who can take them back to their own communities. We'll address the resources further down.

• Volunteer: Open your radio and use the Volunteer action. This will use matchmaking to place you in someone else's game. As you won't be the host, there are limits to the resources you can take with you once you leave multiplayer and return to your own community.
• Call for Help: This option from the radio screen is the opposite of Volunteer. It finds other players and places them in your game via matchmaking. You will be host and reap the biggest rewards.
• Invite Only and Friends Only: This restricts the matchmaking to those on your Friends List or those you invite to your game specifically.

How do items and resources work in multiplayer?

Each player sees different coloured containers and can only loot their own colour; blue, green, orange or yellow. So you can't loot a different coloured container, but you can drop whatever you find on the floor for another player to pick up. That's the easiest way to share items with other players, which include weapons and ammo, food and healing equipment.

In order to take those items back to your base if you're not the host, you'll first need to drop them in the host player's Storage Locker. You cannot take anything with you that you did not put there yourself. If you're the host, don't worry, co-op players cannot make changes to your base.

You also automatically take any Influence you earn back to your own game and community.

What you can't take back to your base are the larger resources, often seen as a giant rucksack for one player to carry. These resources are the most valuable, and include fuel for vehicles and crafting materials which you'll need to build things like a clinic.

One other curiosity to note about State of Decay 2 multiplayer co-op: if you stray too far from each other you'll teleport back to the host. Sure, you can team-up to find resources, but the game won't let four of you wander to different corners of the map at the same time.
